Source 7/9/2017 10:36:16 PM Tenafly Fire Department shared Worland Fire Protection District #1 & Worland Volunteer Fire Department's video.
Worland Fire Protection District #1 & Worland Volunteer Fire Department - 07/07/2017 WFD was called to Smet Recycling on HWY 20 North for a report of an unknown type of fire. Upon arrival we found that the fire was a sulfur mound that had been ignited. Despite the beautiful flames, burning sulfur creates a hazardous gas called sulfur dioxide. WFD was able to position apparatus in a safe location and lay in a line to extinguish the fire. We captured the video, while in full PPE and wearing SCBA's during a size up of the situation, as crews were setting up for suppression. ** Update / Response to comments and questions: Burning sulfur creates sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas that has a very strong, choking odor. The fire was burning in a “bowl” shaped area, allowing all runoff to be collected in the fire area. A minimal amount of water was used to cool the surface of the sulfur and reduce the temperature below the molten stage. Adding water to an SO2 gas creates sulfurous acid, (not to be confused with sulfuric acid) which can be related to “acid rain”. Apparatus and personnel placement as well as careful monitoring of the weather conditions in relation to smoke and chemical plume is very important. The deposits in rural Washakie County are leftover from the Texas Gulf Sulfur Plant that operated north of Worland in the 1950’s. Much of the sulfur is mixed heavily with soil and is not 100% sulfur concentrate. This is a type of fire that is not common but needs to be addressed and dealt with safely and quickly. Fortunately the WFD has Hazmat Technicians and we have an understanding of this as we deal with H2S and SO2 on a somewhat regular basis. I recently found out that the house I grew up in at 61 Tenafly Road, had a fire 5 years ago. The fire was actually in my old room on the third floor. My family(The Smiths-my dad was middle school principal for years), thank you even though we moved years ago.

Source 3/7/2017 9:12:27 PM Pink Heals Bergen County NJ shared an event to Tenafly Fire Department's Timeline.
Emergency Services Vehicle Rally for Ryu - Ryu who is 5 years old was diagnosed with retinoblastoma which is a rare form of eye cancer at the age of 3 years old. He has been battling mestastatic retinoblastoma since 2016. Unfortunately, the best option for him is enucleation of his left eye to remove the 3 tumors they discovered. The cancer came back with a vengeance with two tumors, one on the frontal lobe and the other on his optic nerve going towards the good eye, and also a cluster of cancerous cells in his spine.Pink Heals Bergen County attended a fundraiser for Ryu but unfortunately he had to be rushed to the hospital due to a fever. Up until the day of his fundraiser and he saw the fire apparatus Ryu wanted to be a scientist. Ryu now wants to be a firefighter but keeps asking his mom if he can be one with only one eye. On March 12th 2017, Pink Heals Bergen County will making a visit to Ryu. We are asking for all emergency services to Rally with us to pay him a visit. All fire apparatus, EMS apparaus and police vehicles are welcome. We will be meeting at the old Valley Fair parking lot located at 260 Bergen Turnpike Little Ferry and then proceed past Little Ferry firehouse on Main Street. If your deparment would like to participate please email pinkhealsbcnj@Outlook.com or comment with your department name and apparauts attending. Thank you for your help in making this a special visit to Ryu. **Weather and Health Conditions permitting. Any changes will be posted**
